Epsilon Eta
was founded by Liza Schillo in 2006 at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is America's first
environmental
honors fraternity. The chapter at Chapel Hill is the fraternity's Alpha
chapter.
Epsilon Eta comes from the
Greek words for science and morality. The fraternity was founded not
only to support scientific research, but to encourage the use of this
knowledge to promote a sustainable society. The fraternity's members
range from policy students to scientists, who together from a network of
future environmental leaders.
The fraternity was founded on
three pillars of achievement:
1. Networking:
The first priority of Epsilon Eta is to connect outstanding students
whose primary academic focus is the environment, and to provide them
with a network of support and opportunities during and after their
academic career. The organization will connect students not only with
each other, but with professors, alumni, scientists, policy makers,
non-profit organizations, and other members of the environmental
community.
2. Service:
Epsilon Eta will focus not just on academic excellence, but in
putting ideas into action through service projects. Examples of projects
include river clean-ups, hosting members of the environmental community
for public lectures, and community outreach and public education.
3. Recognition:
Finally the fraternity will recognize its members for their academic
excellence as well as their leadership and dedication to the
environmental community.
